What is Article 243B of Indian Constitution
- This article mandates the establishment of Panchayats at three levels: village, intermediate, and district levels, in every State of India. However, it provides an exception that in a State with a population not exceeding twenty lakhs (two million), Panchayats at the intermediate level may not be constituted.
- In essence, Article 243B lays the foundation for the decentralized system of local self-government through Panchayats in rural areas, ensuring that they exist at the village and district levels and optionally at the intermediate level, depending on the population of the State.
